Marking Five Years Since Our Official Registration
Five years after registration as a CBO, we look back at what community-led organising has built in Mwiki.
The Details
Five years ago today, Camp Nuo was formally registered as a Community Based Organization under registration number KAS/CBO/5/4/2020/752 by the Department of Social Development, State Department for Social Protection. What began as a small holiday camp for local children has grown into six ongoing programs reaching hundreds of Mwiki residents each year.
The anniversary was marked with a small gathering of long-serving volunteers and elders who have supported the work since before registration, several of whom were present at the very first, informal holiday camp in 2019.
Organisers used the occasion to publish a short internal review of what has and hasn't worked over five years — a practice they plan to repeat at every future milestone, treating honest self-assessment as part of accountability to donors and residents alike.
"Every plan we make starts at the baraza, with residents in the room, not just volunteers." — A village elder, Mwiki
Why It Matters
Formal registration and transparent, regularly published reporting are what allow Camp Nuo to build lasting partnerships with schools, chiefs, health volunteers and donors — relationships that a purely informal volunteer group would find far harder to sustain over multiple years.
