December Holiday Camp Closes With a Community Showcase
Fifty children performed songs, drama and art from the camp at a closing event attended by parents and elders.
The Details
Camp Nuo's December holiday camp closed with a showcase event where 50 participating children performed songs, drama and displayed artwork created during the two-week program, in front of parents, elders and volunteers gathered at the community hall.
Certificates of participation were handed out to every child, and three long-term mentor pairings were formed for teens moving into the new school year — a smaller number than the April cohort, but organisers note that quality of the pairing matters more than volume.
Parents attending the showcase were also given a short briefing on the January baraza and invited to raise concerns for the coming year, closing the loop between the camp and the wider planning process.
"I used to think leadership was for other people. Now I run our class discussion group." — A camp participant, age 16
Why It Matters
Unsupervised school holidays are consistently flagged by Mwiki parents and teachers as a period of higher risk for idleness, petty crime exposure and falling behind academically. Structured mentorship during these windows, backed by ongoing check-ins through the term, is designed to close that gap rather than paper over it for two weeks and disappear.
