April Camp Introduces a Girls' Leadership Circle
A new small-group session for teenage girls focused on confidence, safety and goal-setting.
The Details
Alongside its usual April holiday camp activities, Camp Nuo piloted a girls' leadership circle for teenage participants — a smaller, facilitated discussion space covering confidence-building, personal safety and setting academic goals, run separately from the main camp programme.
The pilot group of 14 girls met for four sessions across the two-week camp, with a female volunteer facilitator leading discussions that participants said felt more open than they expected a group setting to allow.
Feedback from the pilot shaped it into a now-regular feature of every holiday camp, expanded from four sessions to a full weekly slot by the December 2025 camp.
"The mentors don't just show up once. They keep checking on the teens they're paired with." — A volunteer coordinator, Camp Nuo
Why It Matters
Unsupervised school holidays are consistently flagged by Mwiki parents and teachers as a period of higher risk for idleness, petty crime exposure and falling behind academically. Structured mentorship during these windows, backed by ongoing check-ins through the term, is designed to close that gap rather than paper over it for two weeks and disappear.
