Emergency Food Support for 20 Households After a Dry Spell
A prolonged dry spell pushed several already-vulnerable households into crisis; we responded with emergency baskets.
The Details
A prolonged dry spell affecting food prices across Nairobi hit already-vulnerable Mwiki households hardest. Working with elders, Camp Nuo identified 20 households in urgent need and delivered emergency food baskets within a week of the concern being raised.
Alongside the baskets, households were given information on nearby county relief distribution points, since a single emergency basket was understood from the outset to be a bridge rather than a solution to a longer dry spell.
The speed of this response — under a week from concern raised to baskets delivered — has become something of a benchmark organisers now hold themselves to for future emergency responses.
"A food basket at the right week can be the difference between a child eating and a child skipping school." — A community health volunteer
Why It Matters
Acute food insecurity in Mwiki tends to spike around school fee deadlines, dry spells and sudden loss of a household's main income. Identifying affected households through people who already know them — village elders and community health volunteers — keeps the response fast, fair and free of the stigma that formal application processes can carry.
