Mid-Year Food Basket Drive Reaches 35 Households
Working with village elders, we identified and supported 35 households facing acute food insecurity during the school mid-term period.
The Details
Ahead of the school mid-term break, when household budgets are typically stretched thinnest, Camp Nuo worked with village elders across Mwiki to identify 35 households in acute need — many headed by elderly residents living alone or single parents managing a sudden drop in income.
Each household received a basic food basket covering staple items for roughly two weeks. Five households with longer-term needs were additionally referred to county social protection programs, with a volunteer following up two weeks later to confirm the referral had actually been acted on rather than left as a name on a list.
Distribution lists for this program are drawn up transparently, in conversation with the same elders who will be visible in the community afterward — a deliberate choice organisers say keeps the process accountable in a way an anonymous application form could not.

Why It Matters
Acute food insecurity in Mwiki tends to spike around school fee deadlines, dry spells and sudden loss of a household's main income. Identifying affected households through people who already know them — village elders and community health volunteers — keeps the response fast, fair and free of the stigma that formal application processes can carry.
