Maternal Health Outreach Day Held With Sub-County Volunteers
Free health talks and referrals reached over 70 women at the Mwiki community hall in partnership with Kasarani Sub-County community health volunteers.
The Details
In partnership with Kasarani Sub-County community health volunteers, Camp Nuo hosted a maternal health outreach day attended by more than 70 women. Sessions covered antenatal care basics, nutrition during pregnancy and postnatal hygiene, delivered in Swahili and Sheng alongside English to make sure the information landed regardless of a participant's preferred language.
On-site referrals were arranged for anyone needing follow-up at a nearby public health facility, and volunteers distributed basic hygiene kits to attendees before they left. A short question-and-answer session at the end ran well over its scheduled time, which organisers took as a sign the format was working.
This outreach day is now planned as a twice-yearly fixture, timed deliberately outside of school-holiday season so it doesn't compete with Camp Nuo's other major programs for volunteer capacity.
"Prevention is cheaper than treatment, and it starts with a conversation at the community hall." — A Kasarani Sub-County health volunteer
Why It Matters
Preventable illness and maternal health complications are frequently linked, in this community, to gaps in accessible information rather than a lack of will to seek care. Outreach delivered in familiar language, at a familiar venue, by community health volunteers residents already trust, closes that information gap far more effectively than a clinic poster.
