COVID-19 Awareness and Mask Distribution in Mwiki
In the months after registration, our first major program was pandemic response support for residents.
The Details
In the months following its official registration, Camp Nuo's first major coordinated effort was COVID-19 response: distributing masks and soap to households that could not easily access them, and sharing basic prevention information door-to-door in partnership with community health volunteers.
This work took place at a time when misinformation about the virus was widespread in many communities, and volunteers focused as much on answering residents' questions honestly as on distributing supplies.
The relationships built with community health volunteers during this early response became the foundation for the health outreach program Camp Nuo continues to run today.
"Simple things — clean water storage, handwashing — change outcomes more than people expect." — A Camp Nuo health outreach volunteer
Why It Matters
Preventable illness and maternal health complications are frequently linked, in this community, to gaps in accessible information rather than a lack of will to seek care. Outreach delivered in familiar language, at a familiar venue, by community health volunteers residents already trust, closes that information gap far more effectively than a clinic poster.
