Mwiki Women's Table-Banking Group Crosses 50 Members
Our supported savings group reached a new milestone this month, with basic bookkeeping training helping it stay organised as it grows.
The Details
The women's table-banking group Camp Nuo has supported since early 2025 passed 50 active members this month, more than doubling its founding size of 18. Volunteers continue to provide basic bookkeeping facilitation and savings-group governance guidance, helping the group track weekly contributions and small internal loans transparently as membership scales.
Members report using savings to cover school fees, stock small businesses ahead of peak trading seasons, and handle medical emergencies that would otherwise have meant borrowing at high interest from informal lenders.
Camp Nuo's role has intentionally stayed limited to organisational support — the group sets its own contribution rules, elects its own leadership, and manages its own funds. Organisers see this as the model to replicate for future savings groups rather than running them centrally.
"Confidence with a keyboard opened doors these young people didn't know existed." — A volunteer facilitator, Camp Nuo
Why It Matters
Basic digital and financial literacy is increasingly a precondition for entry-level work and safe participation in Kenya's mobile-money economy. Without structured, low-cost training, that gap tends to fall hardest on young people and small traders who cannot afford private computer courses.
